The Most Popular Spectaror Sport In the Island
There have been cars in Barbados since the early years of the 20th century, and the first motor sport competition a hillclimb won by Harold Manning, founder of a motor sport dynasty now in its third generation - was held nearly 80 years ago in the 1930s.
The Barbados Rally Club (BRC), which will celebrate its 60th Anniversary in 2017, is the oldest of the seven member clubs of the Barbados Motoring Federation, the island’s governing body, which annually issues around 400 competition licences . . . all of motor sport’s disciplines are covered, circuit racing and rallying (including historics) joined by autocross, dexterity, drag racing, karting, off-road navigational rallies, rallycoss and rallysprints.
Mid-way through 2014, the island’s original racetrack, Bushy Park – first opened in the 1970s - was comprehensively redeveloped into a multi-purpose world-class facility, which has already hosted Top Gear Festival Barbados and the Race Of Champions. The Vaucluse Raceway, which has been dormant in recent years, returned to regular useage late in 2014.
