Special Olympics Swimmers Make a Big Splash this Friday

Special Olympics Swimmers Make a Big Splash this Friday: June 9 - 2017

There is something very special about swimming because, unlike other sports, swimming is a life skill that is taught, first, to ensure safety and, secondly, for sports and competition purposes. The Barbados Special Olympics swimmers have been learning their skills under the leadership of coach Adele Price, who coached Barbados swimmers to medal-winning performances in the 2015 Los Angeles Special Olympics World Games. On this Friday, June 9, a group of young athletes will put their skills to the test and enjoy the fun of competition at the Special Olympics Barbados National Games Swim Meet.

Teams from four Special Olympics units, Erdiston Special School, Charles F. Broome Special Unit, Eagle Hall Primary Annex and the Special Olympics Outreach and Skills Training Centre, will be swimming in a variety of events at the Aquatic Centre, Wildey. Because many Special Olympics athletes, who are intellectually disabled, also have physical disabilities, the events range from assisted swim to unassisted sprints and relays.

For many of these young athletes, it will be their first opportunity to show family, friends and the whole of Barbados that they are capable of great accomplishments. Barbados is invited to share in the experience, and cheer the swimmers as they reach new goals. As is the case in all Special Olympics sports events, there is free admission for all.
