Day 1 - 2
November 29th & 30th 2018
Fourteen matches were the order of the evening in Day 1 of the Hilton Junior Squash Open 2018 at the Barbados Squash Club, Marine Gardens, Christ Church.
2018 Caribbean Girls Under 11 Champion and #1 seed Phoebe Gittens continued to display great placement and skill as she played first-timer Joanna Atkins. Atkins and Gittens exchanged some beautiful rallies which saw the scores being very close. However, Gitten’s determination would allow her to capture the first game 12-10. The other two games brought great excitement amongst the crowd watching as the girls continued to display their fitness and shot selection. Gittens however would prove why she is the best girls U11 player in the Caribbean by winning both games 11-7, 11-6.
In the boys U19 match, Zachariah Naitram def Kemar Lord (3-1) 12-14, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10. Naitram’s forehand did not let him down in the match as he overpowered Lord on the short balls with his power-hitting and placement. Lord would triumph in the first game 14-12 in a close match which saw both players keeping each other in check. Naitram was not rattled by the early 1-0 lead by Lord and soon Naitram had the games tied at 1-1 after a 9-11 win over Lord. A brief lapse in concentration along with some poor shot selection saw Naitram capitalizing and securing the third game 6-11. Lord fought back with some shots of his own which saw Naitram staying calm and keeping the score close. With the score tied at 10-10 either player knew that smart shot selection would allow for a win in the game. Naitram would rattle off two quick points to allow himself a 12-10 win over Lord.
Day two, Independence Day, the squash courts at the Barbados Squash Club was a flood of blue, yellow and black and the juniors continued to display some great squash skills as each game became more and more competitive. In the boys U15 match, on his return to squash, Zishan Motara came up against the #2 Nathan King in a 5-game haul which saw each player displaying some interesting shot play which brought the spectators to their feet and in awe. King would eventually win (3-2) 4-11, 13-11, 11- 8, 5-11, 11-8.
Sibling rivalry in the GU17 match continued between Jada and Jodi Smith-Padmore with Jodi taking the first game 11-9. Jada would respond with a 7-11 win in the second game. With games tied at 1-1, scores were kept very close with both players showing their athleticism and powerful strokes. At the drop of the last ball, Jodi would take the third game 12-10. A fourth game finish of 11-8 in favor of Jodi Smith-Padmore would guarantee her a 3-1 win over her sibling.
An upset came in the match with the number two seed Nathan King versus Dominic Wilson when Wilson after falling to King in the first game 8-11 made a remarkable come-back to win the subsequent three games 13-11, 11-5, 11-3.
