
Barbados will be the venue of the first ever world-class international triathlon to be hosted in the Caribbean.
The event will take place on Sunday February 12th, 2012 on a Spring Garden Highway course when top triathletes from across the world will compete for a US$5000 total purse and coveted Olympic qualifying points as triathletes they try to make it on the 2012 Olympics start line in London.
The Caribbean region together with North, South, and Central American make up the Americas Zone of the International Triathlon Union global structure and the 2012 Bridgetown ITU Sprint Triathlon Pan American Cup will be the third race on a packed calendar following races in La Paz, Argentina and Vin del Mar, Chile in the month of January.
The schedule will offer three races:
Elite Sprint Triathlon (Males)
Elite Sprint Triathlon (Females)
and a 3km Run for locals and visitors.
Local top triathlete, Jason Wilson, will be aiming for a gold on home soil and top competition from USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and other countries, will be try their best to keep him off the podium.
The event has attracted sponsorship from the Barbados Olympic Association, the Barbados Tourism Authority, and Powerade, to date, and course conditions are ideal for a very fast, close race.
Jason ended 2011 on a high note with an impressive 7th place at the Pan American Games which were held in Mexico in October. Currently training at home since, late December, under a carefully prepared plan by his Canadian-based trainer, Jason’s volume will soon peak at 30 km of swimming, 300 km of cycling, and 65 km of running per week, to be ready for his competition.
