Occasional showers could not put a damper on the spirited play at the Police Sports Club in Weymouth Wednesday.  Champions emerged from the Special Olympics National Games Football Tournament with spectacular team play and individual performances. In the five-a-side competition, gold medals went to the Ann Hill School, which topped the Senior Division with a barrage of goals – ten of them scored by Tyrone Roach.  Teams from the Challenor Creative Arts Training Centre captured second and third place and came away with silver and bronze medals.

Gold medals in the Junior Division were won by the All Saints Primary Special Unit, with Kadeem Brewster and Kyle Cumberbatch racking up five goals each as top scorers in the division.  The Erdiston Special School placed second, winning silver medals, and third-place bronze medals went to Eagle Hall Primary Annex.

With championships completed in football, bocce and aquatics, the Special Olympics Annual National Games now move on to track and field.  The youngest athletes take to the track this Friday, March 2 at the Carlton Grounds in Black Rock for the Special Olympics National Games Junior Track and Field Meet.  The central event on the calendar, the Special Olympics National Games Track and Field Meet, is set for Tuesday, March 6 at the National Stadium.  The senior meet will feature competitors from various special unit teams across the nation, individual athletes and Barbados medal winners from the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

Also still to come is cricket.  In order to allow for more teams and players, the Special Olympics National Games Cricket Tournament, originally set for February, has been rescheduled for March 27 at the Police Sports Club in Weymouth.

Barbados is invited to come out and cheer our intellectually challenged athletes as they put their training and dedication to the test of competition. All Special Olympics events are open to the public and are free of charge.
