Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) Vice-President David Williams and the BMF’s motorcycle representative Roger Worme have been appointed directors of the North America Continental Union (CONU) of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). Their appointments were confirmed by FIM North America President Robert Dingman at the General Assembly of the world governing body of motorcycle sport in Liverpool in the north of England (December 1), which Williams attended.
The six CONUs are the recognised geographic subdivisions of the FIM, which will celebrate its 120th Anniversary in 2024, and are named according to the continent in which each is located: FIM Asia, FIM Africa, FIM Europe, FIM Oceania, FIM North America and FIM Latin America. The BMF became affiliated to the FIM as a member of the North America CONU a year ago, when BMF Treasurer Jeanne Crawford made a formal presentation to the 2022 General Assembly in Rimini, Italy.
Since then, in consultation with the local biking community, the BMF has made significant strides towards creating a more structured framework for motorcycle competition in the island. An area on the north side of Bushy Park in St Philip has already been allocated to be developed as a Motocross Circuit, with the design currently a work in progress.
Vice-President Williams said: “The Federation is very grateful for the support that we have had in the early stages of this work, particularly from Bushy Park Circuit Inc (BPCI), which has provided the land, and the National Sports Council (NSC), which has given us a grant towards the costs of construction.”
BPCI Operations Director Amy Willis added: “Given the history of Bushy Park stretching back to 1971, when cars, bikes and karts would all race at the same meetings, we’re delighted to be working with the BMF and the NSC to provide a permanent home for two-wheeled sport here once again.”
The Federation’s motorcycle representative Worme is well versed in that Bushy Park history, having first competed there at age 17 in dirt track racing on the infield at Barbados Rally Club (BRC) race meetings in the early 1970s, where he won his only trophy. His love for motorcycles started around the age of 10, initially when he rode a small scooter, and he remains an avid rider; as well as riding to work and cruising out on a Sunday, he follows bike racing worldwide, especially MotoGP, and has seen events live at venues including Austin, Indianapolis and Laguna Seca in the USA.
In recent years, the Barbados Association of Dragsters & Drifters (BADD) and Bushy Park Motorsports Inc (BPMSI) have both included classes for motorcycles in their events, although the numbers have not been high, and Bushy Park Track Days also attract a number of bikers. While the BMF has licensed nearly 40 competitors in recent years, there are known to be many more enthusiasts in the island interested in both the sport and leisure aspects of biking.

Editor’s note: the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF), which is affiliated to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), is the island’s governing body for motor sport; it also represents the interests of its Member Clubs in discussions with Government departments which facilitate the sport in the island, in particular the Ministry of Transport, Works & Water Resources, which permits road closures for an agreed number of events each year. Away from motor sport, the BMF affiliate which answers the FIA Mobility remit is the Barbados Automobile Association (BAA).
