Jada Smith-Padmore and Shawn Simpson were crowned the new Champions of the BiiG C.O.B Squash Open 2018 after a thrilling night of exciting squash at the Barbados Squash Club, Marine Gardens, Hastings, Christ Church.
The ladies final was the highlight of the night as Sumairaa Suleman took on the athletic Jada Smith-Padmore in a high quality battle of squash. The duo pushed each other into all four corners in a brilliant match. As both players battled early nerves the first game would see a composed Suleman having a confident 11-2 win. However, Smith-Padmore was able to regroup and pull off the second game11-4. With games tied at 1-all the duo would shift their game into another gear and the 3rd game brought everyone to the edge of their seats as the duo exchanged some powerful shots where Suleman was able to close out the third 12-10. Smith-Padmore was able to regain her composure in the 4th game and surged to win the game 11-7. At 2-all the duo knew it was a do or die mentality in the 5th and final game. Suleman remained composed and jumped out with a 3-0 lead. But Smith-Padmore soon responded with a few shots of her own. In a hard fought match which saw both players determined to secure the win a questionable call was made by Suleman at 12-11 which the referee confirmed all balls were good. This meant that Jada Smith-Padmore would take the decider game 13-11 to be crowned the 2018 BiiG COB Squash Open Female Champion.
In the men’s final #1 Shawn Simpson (BAR) played against Jules Snaggs (SVG). While Simpsons’ powerful style of play was maintained throughout the match, Snaggs graceful style of play yet at times powerful allowed him to stay close to Simpson in the first game which ended 11-8 to Simpson. Game #2 saw a change in tactics by Snaggs where placement and a slower pace was used against Simpson. This allowed Snaggs to gather some points which allowed for a 10-all score in the game. But Simpson would soon recognize the strategy and Snaggs in a rush to win the game would make errors which allowed Simpson to surge ahead winning the second game 12-10. Trying to play catch-up, Snaggs continued his fine style of play trying not to let the lanky yet powerful Simpson get too far ahead of him. But poor shot selection by Snaggs would allow Simpson to clinch the third game 11-8 to triumph 3-0 match victory. Simpson would raise the trophy as the 2018 BiiG COB Squash Open Male Champion.
Third place playoffs matchup saw Rhett Cumberbatch (BAR) and Stewart St John playing a great match. In the end St John had to settle for fourth position after losing to Cumberbatch 3-0.
There was also excitement in the classic plate (5th place playoff) final when Mark Sealy (BAR) and Kevin Bailey (SVG) had the crowd at the edge of their seats gasping at the shot making and athleticism on display. Bailey eventually would triumph over Sealy 11-9, 3-11, 11-6, 14-11, 12-10.
Darien Benn (BAR) came up against Stuart Tippleston (ENG) in a match which saw Benn displaying some great stroke selection, which at times had Tippleston not having a response. The David and Goliath display would end with Benn dispatching of Tippleston 11- 3, 11- 7, 11- 4 to win the Plate final.
