Hometown boy Jason Wilson stormed into the lead on the last lap of the run leg to win the ITU sprint triathlon held in Barbados today.
In rainy and slippery conditions, Wilson’s strong run allowed him to surge past the front-runners and ensured he won his 2nd consecutive ITU race in an unconfirmed  time of 58 mins 21 seconds (58:21) from Michael Poole (USA) – 58:35 and a virtual tie for third: Gaspar Riveros (Chile) – and early leader Luke Farkas (USA) both on 58:36. Wilson won the ITU Olympic distance race in Chile a few weeks ago.
The Canadians continued their dominance of the ladies section with Amelie Kretz of Canada repeating her compatriots (Lauren Campbell) 2012 success in a time of 1:02:39. 2nd was Dominika Jamnicky also of Canada :1:03:23 and favorite Erin Jones of the USA 1:03:33.
Farkas led the field from the start with a strong swim and bike but fell on the last lap of the bike leg allowing the field to close the gap.  There were as many as 7 falls on the bike section as the riders grappled with the slippery conditions on the southern turn.
Wilson was urged on by the large crowd that assembled despite the overcast conditions.  President of the local Triathlon Association, Peter Gibbs, was very pleased with the race organization and overjoyed that the local charge had won the race.  He thanked all sponsors, volunteers and supporters for their help. This was Barbados’ 2nd year of hosting the ITU sanctioned event.
