BFIT Preps to Host International Competition

 

Barbados – The Barbados Federation for Island Triathletes (BFIT) will host its annual Bridgetown Confederation of American Triathlon (CAMTRI) Sprint Triathlon American Cup and Central American and Caribbean Championship on Spring Garden Highway, April 23, 2017. This is the 6th time CAMTRI has awarded BFIT one of 16 Continental Cup Sprint Triathlons.

 

The Spring Garden course will consist of a 750m ocean swim, a 20km bike ride (4 laps) and a 5km run (2 laps). The start times for the races will be 6:00 a.m. for age groupers, 8:30 a.m. for the elite females and 10:30 a.m. for the elite males, admission is free. There will be $5,000 USD in cash prizes awarded to the top five male and female elite athletes.

 

To date, a total of 78 athletes, consisting of 31 age group athletes, 27 elite male and 20 elite female athletes from 16 different countries (Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, France, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Syria, Trinidad, Uruguay, USA) have registered for the event.

 

Some elite athletes that will be participating include Matthew Wright of Barbados, who is a product of BFIT kids series, and had shown progress in his first two races of 2017; Mohamad Alsabbagh of Syria, who trains in Montreal Canada and has accepted BFIT's invitation to compete at this event; John Rasmussen of Canada, who placed 4th and 5th in his first two races for 2017; Manny Huerta of Puerto Rico is an Olympian who competed at the London and Rio, finished 3rd in 2012, 2014 and 2015 at past Bridgetown events; Adriana Barraza of Mexico, who won the event in 2014 and Nicole Truxes of USA, who finished just behind Barraza in 2014.

 

According to BFIT President Darren Treasure, “This will be a fast and exciting event.  It is an opportunity for Barbados to showcase itself as an elite sports tourism destination.  Spectators will have a chance to see Barbadian Elite Matthew Wright compete against a high quality field of international triathletes.”
