The Run Barbados series is traditionally held over the first weekend in December, and it attracts a rich array of both serious and leisure runners. Athletes travel from all over the world to compete in the various events, and running clubs make it a holiday with a running theme.
Much of the media focus in recent years has been centred on the top runners in the 10K and marathon races, but for hundreds of other competitors the fun is being able to share their passion for fitness and healthy living with other people of similar ilk.
The Run Barbados Series dates back to humble beginnings in 1983, but it has developed and matured into a much more professional running festival in modern times. World-rated athletes participate these days in conditions that are challenging, but the lure of a warm tropical climate and some wonderful hospitality overrides the negatives. Visitors love to compete in the Barbados marathon and 10k races, and in several cases clubs travel in big numbers for the event. There are many aspects to the Run Barbados Series. Some fun runners do it for the challenge and spend months preparing for the events, others run for charity and good causes, while the top athletes race to win for prestige and prize money.
The 2011 Series will include last year's winners Robert Letting, Richard Kessio and Women's 10K ace Janet Cherobon, the reigning US 10K and Boston half-marathon champion. Also running will be Canadian Reid Coolsaet who has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics.
